Groppello is a family of varieties, the most well-known representative of which is Groppello Gentile. The vines are characterized by high vigor. The leaves are medium-sized, rounded, slightly dissected, and three- or five-lobed.
The clusters are small or medium, weighing 150–180 g, elongated, cylindro-conical, with a dense structure. The berries are rounded, about 15 mm in diameter, dark blue or blue-violet in color with a thick waxy coating. The flesh is fleshy and juicy, the skin is thin but tough.
The variety is used for winemaking and is utilized for the production of red and rosé wines, often in blends. Groppello Gentile is characterized by a very late ripening period; other varieties may ripen in the mid-season. Yields are usually high, and the variety is relatively resistant to grey mold.
