The variety is the result of crossing a 1202 Couderc (Vitis rupestris × Vitis vinifera cv. Mourvèdre) seedling with another component or hybrid (Monastrell × Vitis rupestris Ganzin) × Castel 216-3. It is used exclusively as a rootstock for grafting grapevines.

Studies on the influence of rootstocks on the Chardonnay variety have established that the use of Grézot 1 contributes to a decrease in titratable acidity in the must. The variety is characterized by moderate resistance to phylloxera, which is why it was previously excluded from a number of trials in France, and it can also facilitate the reproduction of the nematode Xiphinema index.
