The variety represents a group of autochthonous Italian plants, with DNA studies showing that several independent varieties may be hidden under the common name Greco nero in Calabria. The grape has a mid-late ripening period and above-average vine vigor.
Bunches are small or medium, cylindrical or conical in shape, and compact. Berries are medium-sized, round, dark blue with a thick waxy bloom, thin skin, and juicy pulp with a neutral taste.
The variety is a wine grape and is rarely used for creating single-varietal wines, more often being included in blends. Wines made from it are characterized by a ruby-red color, fullness, and roundness, with aromas of plum, cherry, black fruits, and spicy notes.
