Grand Noir de la Calmette is a teinturier wine variety with colored pulp and juice, obtained by crossing Aramon Noir and Petit Bouschet. It is a vigorous, mid-season variety that is sensitive to drought and frost, and moderately susceptible to powdery mildew.
The name is also applied to the old wine variety Corbeau and the table variety Alphonse-Lavallée. The latter is characterized by high yield, however, it possesses insufficient frost hardiness and high susceptibility to downy mildew, powdery mildew and gray mold.
In a number of ampelographic sources, the varieties Péloursin, Dolcetto and Teinturier du Cher may also appear under the name Gros Noir. Due to the lack of uniqueness of the name, clarification of the region of origin and agrotechnical characteristics is required to identify a specific plant.
