The variety originates from the Macedonia region in Greece and belongs to the cultivated species Vitis vinifera. The main purpose of the variety is fresh consumption, however, it is also suitable for the production of white wines and traditional retsina.

The plant belongs to late-maturing varieties. The berries are white in color. Winemaking products from this variety are characterized by lightness, a low level of alcohol, and low acidity.

The variety is susceptible to downy mildew and grey mold. It has a number of local synonyms, such as Amassi, Foustani, Karatzovas, and others.
