The variety is a white wine grape variety, despite its name translating as "Red Veltliner." Genetically unrelated to the Grüner Veltliner variety. The leaves are large, five-lobed, with reddish veins; the bunches are dense and large.
The variety ripens in mid-to-late October. Without crop control, the wine quality is unremarkable; however, with the right approach, the variety produces aromatic wines with floral and spicy notes and moderate acidity.
