Most often, the variety Fortana appears under the name Uva d'oro. This is a wine variety with a very late ripening period and bisexual flowers. The clusters have an average weight of 250–300 g, a conical shape, and high density. The berries are dark blue, almost black, with a medium or large size and a thin waxy coating.

The Fortana variety is characterized by high yield and tolerance to phylloxera on sandy soils, but it is sensitive to frost and unstable to a number of fungal diseases. It is used for the production of red wines with pronounced acidity and tannins.

As a synonym, Uva d'oro can also represent the white variety Passerina, which is characterized by high vigor and yield. In addition, the name is found in relation to the rare varieties Uva d'oro bianca and Ortrugo in certain regions of Italy.
