Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety belongs to the mid-late or late maturity group. Leaves are round, five-lobed, slightly or moderately dissected, with dense pubescence on the underside. Bunches are small or medium, conical, and characterized by looseness. Berries are medium, round or slightly flattened, dark purple in color with a waxy bloom.

The plant has very high vigor and is prone to millerandage, which causes looseness of the bunches. The variety is susceptible to powdery mildew and shows moderate resistance to downy mildew and gray mold. It is known by the synonyms Bonarda Novarese, Balsamea, Balsamina, Martellana.

The grapes are used in winemaking to produce wines with medium body, soft tannins, and moderate acidity, in the aroma of which floral and fruity notes predominate. It is frequently used for blending to soften tannins and add aromatic complexity; it is rarely used for varietal wines.
