The variety has Balkan roots and has historically been cultivated in the Italian region of Apulia. The purpose of the variety is the production of a wide range of red wines, from dry to dessert.

The plant belongs to early-ripening varieties with a harvest period at the end of August — early September. The leaves are five-lobed; clusters are medium-sized, conical or cylindrical, and often dense. Berries are medium, rounded, dark blue in color with thin skin and an abundant waxy bloom.

The variety is characterized by low resistance to grey mold and spring frosts, and is also prone to flower drop, which causes uneven berry ripening. Wines from this variety possess a rich color and aromas of red fruits with spices, while quality heavily depends on growing conditions and harvest timing.
