The variety is a historic local plant of the Piedmont region, historically widespread in the province of Asti. It is known by the synonyms Curnaiolo, Neretto di Marengo, and Freisone. The vine is characterized by high vigor and is fertile and productive. The variety shows good resistance to diseases, including mold, which allows for extending the duration of the bunches on the vine.

The variety belongs to the late-ripening group; harvesting is usually carried out in mid-October. The grapes have a high tannin content and are distinguished by a high content of the antioxidant resveratrol, the level of which continues to increase during the berry ripening process. It is used mainly in commercial winemaking to create structured wines and passito-style wines.
