The variety is an autochthonous cultivar of southwestern France, historically cultivated in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. The plant is characterized by vigorous growth and good shoot maturation. The leaf is medium or large in size, round and three-lobed. Clusters are large or medium, dense, with oval-shaped berries, the color of which varies from red-blue to black.

The variety possesses high resistance to powdery mildew and moderate susceptibility to grey mold. It is used primarily for the production of red and rosé wines, which are distinguished by intense color, low alcohol level, moderate tannins, medium acidity, and fruity notes. It is known by a number of synonyms, including Gros Auxerrois, Isabelle and Mourvèdre d'Afrique.
