The vine is characterized by high growth vigor and a semi-upright habit. Leaves are round, three-lobed, with an open U-shaped petiolar sinus and large teeth. The leaf blade is rugose, with slight pubescence on the underside. Bunches are medium-sized, cylindrical, and moderately compact. Berries are medium, round or oval.
The variety is of medium maturity: bud burst occurs one week after Chasselas, and full maturity two and a half weeks after it. Valérien is quite productive and allows for moderate or long pruning. It requires mandatory grafting. The variety is moderately resistant to downy mildew, vines are sensitive to wind damage, and a tendency for flower/berry drop is also characteristic.
