The variety belongs to the species Vitis vinifera L. and is characterized by black-blue colored berries. Its origin is linked to the Valencia region of Spain, where it is considered autochthonous.

This grape has many synonyms, such as Beba Negra, Calop Negro, Grumer, and Balancí. In ampelographic studies, questions sometimes arise regarding its identity and possible similarity to the Beba negra variety. Currently, work is underway in some regions, including DO Alicante, to restore and preserve the variety.
