The variety is a wine grape and originates from Greece. The plant has good vigor and is fertile. The berries have a dark blue, almost black, color.
The grape is used as a colorant variety for local blends, less frequently for the production of single-varietal wines. It is found in winemaking on islands such as Paros and Lemnos. The variety has a number of synonyms, including Vapsa, Vafissa, Vaphtra, Vautra and Vavtra.
