Xarel·lo is an autochthonous variety, the result of a natural crossing of the Hebén and Brustiano Faux varieties. The bushes are characterized by vigorous growth and a semi-upright vine habit. The bunches are medium-sized, truncate-conical, loose or moderately dense. The berries are medium-sized, round or short-elliptical, with thick yellow-green skin.
The variety belongs to the mid-ripening group and is high-yielding. It possesses good resistance to drought and gray mold, however, it is sensitive to downy mildew, powdery mildew, ovary shedding, and millerandage. It is not recommended for cultivation on excessively moist and fertile soils to avoid excessive vegetative growth.
The grapes are used primarily in winemaking for the creation of blended Cava sparkling wines and still white wines. The products are valued for their high acidity level, structure, and potential for long-term aging. There is a rare mutation with reddish skin — Xarel·lo Vermell.
