The use of hostas in borders requires the selection of low-growing cultivars and maintaining a planting distance equal to half the diameter of a mature clump. This is a long-term landscape element that allows for the structuring of shaded areas where other crops lose their decorative appeal.

To form a stable border, it is recommended to use dwarf and miniature cultivars up to 30 cm in height. An important agrotechnical requirement is maintaining the distance from the edge of the composition: it should be half the diameter of a mature plant of a specific cultivar, which prevents overcrowding or gaps in the border line.

When creating monocultural or contrasting plantings, it is necessary to consider that the leaf color intensity directly depends on the light level. Since the varietal traits of hosta, including shape and texture, are fully manifested only 3–4 years after planting, a border is a long-term project.

Hosta stands out among other border crops for its shade tolerance, allowing it to be used in conditions inaccessible to sun-loving species. The agrotechnics of such plantings include mandatory pest control, particularly slugs, and accounting for the seasonal dieback of the above-ground part with the onset of frost.
