Triticum aestivum L.
A complex disease of wheat caused by fungi of the genus Fusarium, affecting all plant organs and most characteristically manifesting as premature bleaching of the spike and a specific fungal growth on the ear.
In the reference 993 varieties crop Bread wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.
The pathogens of the disease are species of Fusarium graminearum, F. culmorum, F. poae, F. avenaceum, and F. sporotrichioides. The species composition of the complex depends on climatic conditions: F. graminearum dominates in high humidity, whereas F. poae is more common during dry periods.
Symptoms of infection include premature bleaching of individual spikelets or entire ears against the background of healthy plant parts and the formation of pink, orange, or red sporulation growth. Affected grain becomes shriveled, wrinkled, often acquires a pinkish hue, and its embryo frequently dies.
Resistance to Fusarium head blight is polygenically controlled and linked to the Fhb1, Fhb2, Fhb5, and Fhb7 loci. The latter gene, transferred from Thinopyrum elongatum, provides protection by encoding a glutathione S-transferase enzyme that neutralizes the fungus's mycotoxins.
