x Triticosecale Wittm. ex A. Camus
Triticale is susceptible to the loose smut (Ustilago tritici) and common bunt (Tilletia caries) pathogens, which are characteristic of wheat. The infection is systemic in nature and manifests during the heading stage as the conversion of spikelet parts into a black mass of spores.

The causative agent of loose smut in triticale is the fungus Ustilago tritici, which, due to the amphidiploid nature of the crop, infects plant tissues and develops systemically within them. Visual symptoms of the disease become apparent only during heading: spikelets are destroyed and replaced by a black, dusty mass of teliospores, with ovaries, glumes, and awns being affected, while the rachis often remains intact. Diseased specimens frequently head earlier than healthy plants.
A specific system of pathogen races for triticale has not been identified; therefore, virulence parameters developed for wheat are used in phytopathological analysis. Similarly, there is no separate list of triticale resistance genes; breeding programs utilize wheat genes mapped to various chromosomes, as well as rye genetic resources. Variety resistance is determined primarily by field assessment of infection levels under natural or artificial inoculation conditions.
