Container Pepper Cultivation

Capsicum annuum L.

Growing peppers in a limited volume of soil using genetically compact varieties. The method requires control of lighting, humidity, and adherence to specific container volumes for proper root system development.

In the reference 160 varieties crop Bell pepper, where this is mentioned in the description.

For container cultivation of peppers, the optimal container volume is considered to be 3 liters, which is due to the relatively weakly developed root system of the species. Using containers that are too large is inefficient, as the plant cannot fully colonize the root ball. The crop is extremely sensitive to transplanting, so the transfer method is preferred to maintain root integrity.

When selecting planting material, selectively adapted dwarf forms are preferred. In confined spaces, there is a risk of cross-pollination between sweet and hot varieties, which alters fruit characteristics. Despite the perennial nature of the species, the plant is more often cultivated as an annual in containers, and attempting to extend the growing season requires heavy pruning to shape the canopy and stimulate fruiting.

The success of container cultivation depends on maintaining a light regime with 10–12 hours of supplemental lighting and maintaining stable substrate moisture. Ignoring water balance in an indoor microclimate leads to flower and fruit drop, which is a specific stress response of peppers in enclosed spaces.
