Pear frost resistance

Pyrus communis L.

Pear frost resistance is the genetically determined ability of tree tissues to withstand low temperatures. It is a critical component of winter hardiness and includes resistance to early frosts, extreme mid-winter temperatures, and temperature fluctuations during thaw periods.

Pear frost resistance is characterized by the ability of bark, wood, and bud tissues to maintain viability when exposed to critical temperatures. To evaluate varieties, artificial freezing in climate chambers and field observations are used, where the degree of damage is recorded in points.

Highly frost-resistant varieties, capable of withstanding temperatures from -35 to -40 °С, often have genes from Pyrus ussuriensis or Pyrus pyrifolia in their pedigree. At the same time, many dessert European varieties are damaged at -25 °С, and their fruit buds are especially sensitive to frosts occurring immediately after thaws.
