For the European plum, the selection of rootstocks is critical, with cherry plum, blackthorn, damson, other plum varieties, or apricot being the primary choices. Using wild apricot seedlings as a vigorous rootstock for certain cultivars, such as greengages, can lead to incompatibility manifested as brittleness at the graft union, which necessitates substituting budding with improved whip-and-tongue grafting for greater strength.

Summer budding of plum is performed during the period of active sap flow, which ensures easy bark separation. Spring grafting with scions is carried out using the whip-and-tongue method during dormancy or the onset of sap flow, or by bark grafting during active growth. Due to the accelerated aging of plum trees, it is not recommended to graft onto rootstock trees older than 10 years.

Plum scions are sensitive to storage conditions, requiring strict humidity control to prevent the bark from drying out. If turgor is lost, scions must be soaked in water for 24 hours prior to grafting.
