Unlike traditional cultivars that bloom exclusively on old wood, remontant forms possess the potential for repeat flowering. This allows the plant to form flower buds on current-year shoots, ensuring ornamental value even if old shoots are frost-damaged or incorrectly pruned.
The trait is hereditary and is key to reducing cultivation risks in regions with harsh winters. Its agrotechnical significance lies in broadening the pruning window: while removing current-year buds in non-remontant varieties leads to a loss of flowering, the range of agrotechnical operations for remontant types is less restricted.
Currently, there are no standardized quantitative scales for assessing remontancy. The trait is evaluated empirically by monitoring flowering intensity on current-year shoots under conditions of partial or complete removal of old wood.
