Variety traits

Self-fertility of pear

Pyrus communis L.

The ability of pear cultivars to set fruit through self-pollination, measured as the percentage of successful fruit set from isolated flowers.

In the reference 253 varieties crop European pear, where this is mentioned in the description.

To determine the degree of self-fertility in pears, a method involving the isolation of at least 200 buds prior to flowering is used. The level of the trait is assessed based on the percentage of fruit set: cultivars with a fruit set of more than 20% are considered fully self-fertile, those with 10% to 20% are partially self-fertile, and the rest are classified as self-sterile.

Self-fertility in this crop often correlates with the ability for parthenocarpy, which allows for harvest even under unfavorable weather conditions. Despite the possibility of establishing single-cultivar orchards, the presence of pollinizer cultivars remains an important factor that increases yield by 20–30%.
