Citrus Vigor

A biological indicator of the development intensity of the aerial part of citrus plants, determined through morphometric parameters and influencing the choice of rootstock and planting scheme.

To quantify citrus vigor, linear parameters are used, including plant height and trunk diameter, as well as growth intensity indicators such as the length of annual shoots and the number of vegetative periods. Modern research also takes into account the hydraulic conductivity of xylem in seedlings and dendrometric indicators to assess growth activity in real time.

The classification of citrus plants by vigor is based on the height of a mature tree. High-vigor trees (4–5 m) include orange and pummelo; medium-vigor trees (3.0–3.5 m) include lemon and mandarin; and dwarf trees (1.8–2.5 m) include Unshiu group cultivars and Citrus myrtifolia. This data determines the crown formation strategy, planting density, and the use of rootstocks to control tree size and accelerate the onset of fruiting.
