Citrus Rootstock

Citrus L.

Citrus rootstocks determine the plant's adaptation to soil and climatic conditions, resistance to pathogens, and the vigor of the scion. An important biological characteristic is the dependence of the root system on symbiosis with mycorrhizae due to the absence of typical root hairs.

In the reference 44 varieties crop Citrus, where this is mentioned in the description.

The selection of citrus rootstock is critical for managing productivity and fruit quality. Rootstocks are chosen based on their salt tolerance, cold hardiness, and resistance to pathogens such as Phytophthora, nematodes, and the tristeza virus. The use of specific cultivars allows for the control of tree habit, ranging from dwarfing forms, such as Poncirus trifoliata 'Flying Dragon', to vigorous ones, such as Rough lemon.

When propagating rootstocks by seed, preference is given to forms with high polyembryony, which ensures the genetic uniformity of seedlings. Key rootstock groups include trifoliata, which possesses high cold hardiness, and hybrid citranges, valued for their complex resistance. Agronomists must monitor the graft union to prevent the scion from being suppressed by shoots developing from the rootstock.
