Citrus grafting and budding

Citrus L.

Grafting is the primary method of citrus propagation due to the poor rooting ability of many species from cuttings and high vegetative compatibility within the genus.

In the reference 26 varieties crop Citrus, where this is mentioned in the description.

Citrus species are characterized by high interspecific and intergeneric grafting compatibility. The choice of rootstock, such as Poncirus trifoliata, is critical for growth regulation, but requires consideration of biological rhythms: a mismatch in the dormancy periods of the rootstock and scion can cause physiological imbalance. The success of the operation depends directly on the active sap flow period in April-May or August, which ensures optimal callus formation at the site where the cambial layers are joined.

Common practices include bud grafting, such as T-budding and chip budding, as well as cleft grafting and side grafting. When using the latter in protected ground, it is acceptable to use scions with shortened leaves to accelerate crown formation. An important agrotechnical practice after successful union is the removal of rootstock shoots below the graft union, as these actively suppress the development of the cultivated scion.
