Vitis L.
A biological varietal trait characterizing the development intensity of the aerial part of the vine during the growing season.

Shoot growth vigor is determined by regular measurements of their length from the beginning of bud break until growth cessation or by using the 9-point OIV scale. In practical viticulture, a coefficient method is applied, where a normally developed shoot (80–100 cm) is valued at 1, a vigorous one at 1.5, and a weak one at 0.5.
Varieties are classified into low-vigor (e.g., Bastardo, Zolotistiy ranniy), medium-vigor (Zhemchug Saba, Timur), and high-vigor (Bayan shirey, Talisman, Kodryanka). This indicator determines the choice of training system, planting density, and optimal bud load during pruning to maintain a balance between fruiting and vine vitality.
Growth vigor also determines the necessity of canopy management practices and is taken into account when planning fertilization and irrigation systems. High growth intensity in some cases correlates with increased susceptibility to diseases of perennial wood.
