Variety traits

Grapevine growing season

Vitis vinifera L.

This is the time interval from bud burst to full berry maturity, which determines the suitability of a variety for a specific climate based on the sum of active temperatures above +10 °C.

In the reference 73 varieties crop Common grape vine, where this is mentioned in the description.

For grapevines, the growing season is estimated as the calendar duration in days from the start of bud burst to harvest maturity, as well as by the sum of active temperatures (SAT) above the biological minimum of +10 °C. In regions with winter vine covering, the count starts from bud burst, while in non-covering regions, it is measured from the start of spring sap flow to leaf fall.

Grape varieties are classified into seven groups: from extra-early, requiring up to 115 days and 2400 °C SAT, to very late, which require over 145 days and more than 3000 °C. Matching a variety to the actual SAT of a region is critical for achieving conditional berry sugar content and ensuring vine cane maturation before entering winter.

The duration of the growing season determines the timing of green operations, fertilization, and harvesting. Risks include crop failure to mature due to a lack of heat or damage to vines by autumn frosts if a variety's growing season is too long for the local climatic conditions.
