Verticillium wilt of pepper

Capsicum annuum L.

Fungal infection of the vascular system of pepper caused by the pathogens Verticillium dahliae and V. albo-atrum. The disease leads to water metabolism disorder, leaf yellowing, browning of vascular bundles in the stem, and a significant reduction in productivity.

The primary pathogen is the fungus Verticillium dahliae, which persists in the soil for up to 14 years in the form of microsclerotia. Infection is characterized by a loss of leaf turgor, often appearing initially on individual branches, followed by yellowing, defoliation, and death of the entire plant. During diagnosis, browning of the vascular ring is clearly visible on a cross-section of the stem, while the root system often retains a healthy appearance.

Pathogen isolates affecting pepper belong primarily to the vegetative compatibility group VCG 4. Unlike tomatoes, no standardized nomenclature of resistance genes has been developed for pepper, and breeding is based on the search for QTL loci and the study of candidate defense genes. Infected plants are severely stunted, deformed, produce small fruits, or cease fruit production entirely.
