Drought Tolerance of Grapevine

Vitis L.

The ability of grapevine to adapt to water deficit, assessed through indicators of tissue water exchange and stability of the photosynthetic apparatus. Key indicators of variety tolerance include leaf water retention capacity and the type of stomatal regulation of transpiration.

In the reference 122 varieties crop Grapevine, where this is mentioned in the description.

Grapevine possesses high adaptability due to a robust root system; however, the response to drought varies depending on the variety. Tolerance assessment is based on physiological and biochemical indicators, including the average differential rate of leaf water loss, water deficit according to the Litvinov method, as well as the ratio of free to bound water in tissues. Important markers of stress status include an increase in electrolyte leakage, the accumulation of malondialdehyde, and a decrease in the chlorophyll stability index.

Under water stress, grapevine varieties are classified by their stomatal conductance strategy into isohydric, which close stomata rapidly, and anisohydric. Prolonged moisture deficiency negatively affects vine physiology: shoot growth slows, bud fertility decreases, and the phenolic complex of the berries degrades, leading to a deterioration in crop quality and the formation of undesirable organoleptic properties in wine materials.
