Winter protection of fig trees

Ficus carica L.

A critical agrotechnical practice for preserving the previous year's fig wood, ensuring the possibility of fruiting in temperate climates.

Protection is necessary due to the plant's low frost resistance, as it sustains damage at temperatures below -10...-15°C. Since the main crop forms on second-year shoots, preserving the above-ground part is the only way to obtain fruit, as the plant only recovers from root suckers in the spring if it freezes down to the ground level.

The most effective method is trench cultivation. Before covering, leaves and unripened tips are removed, after which the shoots are bent down to the bottom of a 40–50 cm deep trench. The construction includes mulching the base, protection with rigid shields, and insulation with moisture-proof materials to prevent damping off.

Work is carried out in late autumn after the first frosts, once the plant has completed its vegetation period. The cover is removed in the spring after the threat of late frosts has passed, in order to protect the buds from damping off and death.
