Hydrangea macrophylla (Thunb.) Ser.
For Hydrangea macrophylla, winter protection is mandatory, as its flower buds are set on the previous year's shoots and are damaged at temperatures from -5°C. Without protection, the bush loses its ability to bloom in the following season.

A full air-dry shelter is applied for this crop. Preparation includes removing inflorescences and lower leaves, hilling the base of the bush with peat or coniferous needles to a height of 10–30 cm, bending the shoots to the ground, and securing them with staples. A frame is installed on top, covered with several layers of non-woven material and moisture-proof film for protection against precipitation.
It is important to avoid direct contact between the shoots and airtight materials to prevent damping off. Covering is carried out after stable frosts begin, and spring removal is performed in stages, protecting the awakened buds from late frosts. Even varieties capable of blooming on current-year shoots require covering to guarantee full flowering.
