The Black Princess variety, known in Japan as Kurohime, is a deciduous shrub. The main features of the plant are dark purple, almost black shoots and petioles, as well as leaves that acquire a purple hue when grown in the sun.

The inflorescences are corymbose in shape with fertile flowers in the center and sterile flowers at the edges. In acidic soil, the flowers acquire a deep black-purple tone; in an alkaline environment, reddish shades appear. The plant prefers partial shade and protection from direct sunlight.
