In the Italian tradition, the name Maschio was historically used to designate trees valued not for yield, but for their ability to effectively pollinate main commercial olive varieties. In a number of cases, the term acts as a synonym for the Morchiaio variety.
These trees are characterized by an upright crown and small, elliptic-lanceolate leaves. Productivity is low; the main emphasis during cultivation was placed on the production of a large quantity of pollen.
Fruits ripen late, are of medium size, and have an ovoid, slightly asymmetric shape, acquiring a violet-black color upon ripening. The trees possess good winter hardiness but show high sensitivity to peacock spot disease.
