The Morcarol variety (synonym Morchiaio) is widely distributed in Tuscany, Italy, and is frequently found in old olive groves. It is practically not used in commercial production due to low productivity and irregular bearing, serving as a pollinator for the Moraiolo, Leccino, Ascolana Tenera, and Arauco varieties.
The tree is characterized by low vigor and an upright canopy shape, with small elliptic-lanceolate leaves. The fruits are medium-sized, have an ovoid, slightly asymmetrical shape, and acquire a violet-black color upon ripening.
The variety has a late ripening period and is characterized by a high rate of ovary abortion (from 68% to 80%). The plant has good cold tolerance, but is sensitive to the fungal disease Spilocaea oleaginea.
