Mortina trees reach large sizes and have small pointed leaves. The variety is named after the resemblance of the fruits to myrtle berries: the olives are small, spherical in shape, and upon full maturity acquire an intense black color and have shiny skin.

The variety is valued for its high oil yield, although the extraction process can be technologically complex. The trees are sensitive to low temperatures, therefore they are cultivated in warm, well-sunlit locations of the Ligurian region.
