The variety is a result of folk selection and is traditionally cultivated on the Dubrovnik coast and in other regions of Dalmatia. Molecular genetic studies have confirmed that Murgulja is an independent variety with its own genetic profile, distinct from other local varieties.

The fruits of the variety are used for olive oil production. In olive growing, it is used as a component of blends together with such varieties as Oblica, Lastovka and Drobnica. Detailed agronomic characteristics, including data on ripening periods and disease resistance, are not presented in the publications.
