The variety is a product of folk selection adapted to the conditions of the Badajoz and Seville provinces, as well as border regions of Portugal. Trees possess high vitality in arid climates on poor soils, and are often pruned to limit height in order to simplify manual harvesting.
The fruits of the variety are large and oval in shape, changing color from green to dark purple upon ripening. The variety is considered dual-purpose: it is used both for the production of olive oil, which is distinguished by a high linoleic acid content and a sweet fruity taste, and for preservation as table olives.
