The variety has synonyms Amaral and Azal Tinto, common in Portugal. It belongs to the Caiño variety group and is genetically related to such local varieties as Caiño Tinto, Caiño Longo, and Castañal. The crop is adapted to the conditions of the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.
The winemaking profile of the variety is characterized by a high level of acidity. The wines show potential for the accumulation of glycosidic terpenes and a relatively low concentration of ethyl esters and acetates. The variety is included in the registries of traditional grape varieties for the Ribeiro and Ribeira Sacra zones.
