The variety is traditional to Galicia and the northern regions of Portugal, where it is known as Borraçal. Vines are characterized by medium vigor, early bud break, and high fertility, although the variety requires long pruning due to irregular yields.

Bunches are medium-sized, conical, and of moderate density. Berries are spherical, black-blue in color, with thick skin and a waxy bloom. The variety is highly susceptible to oidium, downy mildew, and grey mold.

Wine from this variety possesses pronounced acidity, tannins, and intense fruit-floral aromas. It is important to note that the name «Caiño» often covers different genetic varieties, and the variety itself should not be confused with Tinto Cão.
