Montalbana is an ancient Spanish grape variety, the first mention of which dates back to 1362. At present, the variety is considered rare and is being actively studied as part of projects to restore the genetic diversity of Mediterranean vineyards.
The variety is an independent genotype, as confirmed by SSR analysis, and has no direct relation to the Montalbà variety. In literature, it is sometimes found as a synonym for Garnacha alicantina, however, this connection requires further clarification. A few vine samples were found in the area of Benissa in the province of Alicante.
