The variety belongs to the species Vitis vinifera. Genetic and morphological studies confirm that Berzamino is an independent variety, distinct from Marzemino and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, however, detailed agronomic characteristics for it are practically non-existent.

In most sources, the name Berzamino is used as a synonym for the late-ripening variety Marzemino. The latter is susceptible to grey mold, downy mildew, and powdery mildew, and its fruit is used for the production of red wines with aromas of violet and plum.
