Variety description

10 August 2026

Argentinian Bonarda is genetically identical to the French variety Douce Noire and the Californian Charbono. It is a wine grape variety valued for its yield and adaptability to various soils, used to create wines with medium body, high acidity, and fruit aromas of blueberry, plum, and cherry.

The Italian group of varieties includes Bonarda Piemontese, which produces powerful full-bodied wines, and the use of the name to denote red wines based on the Croatina variety in the Oltrepò Pavese region.

The Bonarda nera variety has a perfect flower, medium to large, deeply lobed, five-lobed leaves with felt-like pubescence on the underside. Clusters are medium, conical, and dense; berries are medium-sized, round, and black. The vines are characterized by medium vigor, good cane maturation, low yield, and medium resistance to fungal diseases, ripening in the second ten-day period of September.
