Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety is ancient and has been historically grown in various countries, which led to the emergence of many synonyms, including Parraleta, Bomvedro, Monvedro, Tinta Caiada, and Carcajolo Noir. In Australia, the variety was long mistaken for Carignan, however, ampelographers emphasize their differences and also advise against confusing this variety with Graciano.

The plant belongs to mid-late or mid-season varieties with low yield. Bunches are medium or small, compact. Berries are medium-sized, oval-shaped, dark blue with a thick waxy bloom. The variety is characterized by low frost and fungal disease resistance, in particular, high susceptibility to Botrytis.

Used for the production of wines possessing deep color, good structure, pronounced acidity, and high phenolic content with characteristic floral notes in the aroma. Used mainly in blends, although varietal wines also exist.
