The variety is autochthonous to the northeastern part of Spain and is a natural hybrid of the Hebén variety and an unknown parent variety. In ampelographic catalogs, the name Bonicaire appears as a synonym for the Trepat variety.

The plant is characterized by early bud break, which makes it vulnerable to spring frosts, and late ripening. The variety forms large, compact clusters with berries that have relatively thick skins, and it requires short pruning with average yield rates.

The grape is sensitive to Botrytis cinerea, downy mildew, and phomopsis cane and leaf spot. Wines produced from this variety are distinguished by a light hue, moderate tannins, high acidity, and characteristic notes of red berries, spices, and wild herbs.
