The variety belongs to the "Caiño" group and is indigenous to the northwestern part of Spain and the northern regions of Portugal. The crop is traditionally adapted to the granite and slate soils of the region.

The wine variety is intended for the production of red wines, to which it provides structure and freshness. It is characterized by a specific aromatic profile with the potential for accumulation of glycosidic terpenes and a stable sugar-acid ratio under changing climate conditions.
