The variety belongs to the Caíño family and is characterized by horizontal shoot growth, early bud burst, and a mid-late ripening period. The plant is drought-tolerant, adapts well to less fertile soils, and is suitable for short pruning, however, it requires increased potassium rates.
The grapes have medium susceptibility to powdery mildew, botrytis, and excoriose, and are sensitive to direct sunlight, which causes bunch sunburn. In winemaking, the variety is rarely used for varietal wines, more often appearing in blends with varieties such as Sousón, Mencía, and Brancellao.
Wines from Caíño longo are characterized by medium color intensity, pronounced acidity, and an aromatic profile with notes of dark berries, floral, balsamic, and spicy undertones. The alcohol content in the finished product is approximately 12% vol.
