The variety is the result of folk selection and natural selection, rather than intentional cross-breeding. It is widely known under the synonyms Sercial, Cerceal, Cerceal Branco, Esganinho, and Escanoso. It should be noted that the variety Esgana Cão Tinto is a separate variety, Touriga Franca, and is not related to this white grape.

The clusters are of medium size; the thin skin of the berries makes the variety prone to rot. At the same time, the plant demonstrates resistance to the fungal diseases powdery mildew and downy mildew. The variety ripens late and is often the last to be harvested.

The grapes are used for the production of wines with high acidity and pronounced minerality, with aroma profiles featuring notes of citrus, green apple, almond, and flowers. In Madeira, the variety is used to create dry wines with high aging potential.
