The variety is used exclusively for winemaking, particularly for the production of dry wines, including lightly sparkling rosé variants. It represents a group of varieties, such as Espadeiro Tinto and Espadeiro Mole. In some southern regions of Portugal, the name may refer to the Tinta Amarela variety.
The vine is vigorous, with shoots prone to curling. The leaves are medium-sized, five-lobed, shallowly lobed, with slight pubescence on the underside. The flowers are hermaphroditic. The clusters are predominantly large, conical, and winged, with berries of an intense bluish-red color and unpigmented pulp.
Wines from this variety possess high acidity, light to medium body, and low alcohol levels. The aromatics are dominated by berry notes, including wild strawberry, raspberry, strawberry, and red currant. The wines are characterized as fresh and intended for consumption at a young age.
