The variety is also known by the local name Pan y Carne. It is an ancient variety that was at risk of extinction and is currently grown on very limited areas. The question of the possible genetic relationship of this variety with Merenzao or Trousseau varieties is being investigated.

The plant is characterized by early bud break, early veraison, and an early ripening period. The yield of the variety is estimated as medium to high. The bunches and berries are small, the latter having a blue-black color and non-pigmented pulp. The variety is adapted to the climatic conditions of the Bierzo region and successfully completes its vegetative cycle at high summer temperatures.

The purpose of the variety is exclusively for winemaking. Wines made from it possess fine tannins and notes of cherry, raspberry, floral, and herbaceous undertones. The variety is used both in blends and for the production of varietal wines.
